... or you don't want your console server to contain anything that might 
not pass fsck(8) on power-up, necessitating that you reach _its_ console, 
usw.  Firmware is good.  And it has to defend itself (i.e. accept ssh 
connections) because if it's behind a firewall that didn't pass fsck(8)....

We were so cheap, we built our own little FreeBSD box from a mini-PC card, 
and it all runs from flash.  But used Cyclades boxes are probably next.
