The online version of my resume still says Chicago, so I get the
occasional cold inquiry from recruiters who have found me via Google.

I don't mind: the salaries are higher here in the Bay Area, (SAGE survey
says my job averages $20,000 higher here than back home, though in my
experience it is so far $30,000 higher, :) but the housing is overpriced
and the infrastructure sucks, so I'm saving my money this time around so
I can afford some housing in a better place, like Chicago, a way down
the road, and I'll probably want a job then too.

As for the midwest, I came out here as part of a large migration of
Illinois people. Most are from Chicago suburbs, and they vastly prefer
Bay Area suburbs, and don't intend to leave. A few of us are from
Chicago proper, and we tend to look forward to the day that we can
return. For those who don't grok the midwest, but may be curious,
please understand that cities are different from suburbs are different
from rural areas ... and, imo ... Cali has better suburbs, it seems, and
Chicago is a better city than San Francisco, it seems. Though,
everyone's milage will vary.

Cheers,
