The Security Role for Linguistic Content Analysis: Monitoring content
that leaves the organization
Jim Nisbet, Tablus

Computational linguistics is not a technology usually associated with
networking devices such as firewalls and packet monitors, but this
technology offers some powerful new capabilities. The premise is that if
we want to look for high-value information leaving the company then we
need to look to the same kind of linguistic categorization technologies
software companies have historically used.

This talk principally explores content analysis techniques, ranging from
regular expression pattern matching to latent semantic analysis which
can be used to identify content characteristics reliably enough so that
policies can be defined based on the content itself.

Jim Nisbet has many years of industry experience in networking,
databases and linguistic analysis. As the founder and CEO of Tablus, he
has worked as both a product architect and developer since the start of
the company. Prior to Tablus, Mr. Nisbet was the Senior Vice-President
of Products and Technology for Semio Corporation, which provided content
categorization solutions. Mr. Nisbet was the founder and Chief
Technology Officer of DataTools, a database software tool company
founded in 1991 and acquired by BMC Software in 1997. Before founding
DataTools, Mr. Nisbet worked for Stanford University at the Center for
Information Technology for over 15 years.
