From rnovak at indyramp.com Wed Oct 12 20:05:58 2011 From: rnovak at indyramp.com (Robert Novak) Date: Wed, 12 Oct 2011 20:05:58 -0700 Subject: BayLISA board elections coming November 17 - Come vote, or run for the board, or both. Message-ID: Hi folks, I'd like to remind everyone that our Board of Directors election will be held at the beginning of the November 17 meeting. All members in good standing (paid members, board members, and honorary members) are eligible to vote for the new class of board members, and are encouraged to attend the meeting to do so. You must be present to vote. If you're not a paying/honorary/board member but would like to get involved in the board election this year, and to help support BayLISA's activities over the next year, you can still do that. You can join BayLISA through our web site via Paypal ( http://www.baylisa.org/members/join.shtml, preferred), mail a form with your payment (see the previous link for the membership form), or you can fill out a form and pay on site at either of our next two general meetings (October 20, November 17). Board membership is $45 for most individuals, $15 for students. Consult your tax advisor or employer to see if your membership is tax-deductible or reimbursable on expense reports. There are also corporate membership options, which give individual membership benefits to an institutional representative, with the option to sponsor meetings during the year as well. Details are at http://www.baylisa.org/members/join.shtml as well. For those of you who are motivated to get actively involved with BayLISA's operation, we will be looking for a couple of new board members. Several current board members are running for re-election, but some members have left or will be moving on to new challenges, and we would like to get a strong panel of people to help run and grow the organization for the next two years and beyond. It only takes about two hours a week, on average, including board and general meetings, outreach, and meeting coordination. If you can make this kind of commitment (or more) and would like to be on the ballot for the November 17 election, please get in touch with me directly with any questions or simply to state your candidacy. We'll ask that candidates be present promptly at the beginning of the meeting, and we will offer a chance for a brief statement if you wish to offer one. As far as answering the most popular question of the week... we're hoping to have details on the October general meeting (October 20, 7:30pm, LinkedIn at 2051 Stierlin Ct in Mountain View) on the website and the Meetup page soon. Details for November and December will be coming soon as well. Also, we're looking for some short presentations (demonstrations preferred) for December's short topics meeting. We're planning a similar format to the June meeting, with shorter topics at the beginning and a featured speaker to wrap up the meeting. If you'd like to volunteer for a ~10 minute talk on something you've done recently, get in touch with me to get on the schedule. Particularly since we, as (former, or perhaps "no longer professional," in my case) sysadmins, we have reason to appreciate the value of infrastructure, we can appreciate the value of someone who contributed so significantly to the fundamental tools with which our environments have been built. I'm a bit pleased that on one occasion, I actually had the presence of mind to thank him -- he & I were the sole occupants of an elevator car at a USENIX in San Diego. I also recall that after one of Kirk's BSD/CSRG history talks at USENIX (I think this one was in Monterey), Dennis pointed out that when he & his colleagues at Bell Labs were working on UNIX, they did so with the intent to share it. The world's a better place for his contributions, IMO. Peace, david -- David H. Wolfskill david at catwhisker.org Depriving a girl or boy of an opportunity for education is evil. I once had the privilege of meeting him at a USENIX conference about 10 years ago. I remember, after talking to him for a few minuets, blurting out, "You and Kernighan are the 2 guys who made my career possible." I told my father, who teaches computer science at ODU in Virginia, that I had met Dennis Ritchie and that he was present at the creation. My father said "No, Kernighan and Ritchie had said 'Let there be light". It's sad that another giant in computers has passed away. From rnovak at indyramp.com Tue Oct 18 21:08:53 2011 From: rnovak at indyramp.com (Robert Novak) Date: Tue, 18 Oct 2011 21:08:53 -0700 Subject: Update on this week's BayLISA meeting, and call for volunteers/suggestions Message-ID: Hi all, First, an update on this Thursday's BayLISA general meeting. Please RSVP at http://www.meetup.com/BayLISA/events/19067941/ if you're coming so we can plan refreshments and seating. (If you don't RSVP, you're still welcome, but we may not have enough chairs or pizza for you.) As seen on the Meetup page and Baylisa.org: o/____________________________ o\ John Masci of Coraid will be talking about ATA over Ethernet in the context of datacenter IP storage, the benefits it offers over Fiber Channel and iSCSI for performance and management, and Coraid's unique technology in this area. James Thomason of Gale Technologies will be speaking on SysAdmins in the Post-Cloud Era. James Thomason is the CTO of Gale Technologies, a provider of orchestration and automation software for creating cloud-like infrastructures. Thanks to Coraid for sponsoring this month's meeting. Please talk with their representatives about their Ethernet SAN offerings, and thank them for their generous support of BayLISA. o/____________________________ o\ Second, we need your help. We on the board are always looking for speakers and topics and themes for upcoming BayLISA meetings. But we have at least 500 people who read these mailing lists or are registered with our Meetup page. Most of you have connections that could lead to very productive future meetings. Got a SE who really knows her or his stuff? A vendor whose technology has made your life easier and your profit-sharing more profitable? An area of technology you want to learn but can't get your company to send you to training for? Let us know. The board of directors has been running a bit short-handed this year, and we're trying to make the best experiences possible for our members and guests. If we're going to make the meetings work for you, we need to know what you want from your organization. So take a moment and send in a suggestion, or a referral, whether it's for speakers, sponsors, or both. You can email me directly at rnovak at indyramp.com or send your suggestion to blw at baylisa.org, and we'll see what we can do to act on the recommendations that come in. A side benefit of helping us find speakers is that you'll know farther in advance who's speaking at the next BayLISA meeting, and even a couple after that. So do your part and help BayLISA be the best we can be. Thanks, and hope to see you Thursday. Robert Novak BayLISA Secretary/Cheerleader
