From lgj at usenix.org Thu Feb 3 13:14:54 2011 From: lgj at usenix.org (Lionel Garth Jones) Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2011 13:14:54 -0800 Subject: USENIX HotCloud '11 Call for Papers Now Open Message-ID: <9C7AD974-06D6-4D01-AD57-8161F825D629@usenix.org> The Call for Papers for the 3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing (HotCloud '11) is now available. On behalf of the HotCloud '11 Program Committee, we invite you to submit papers that describe novel research directions, as well as practical experiences, in the area of cloud computing. HotCloud brings together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry working on cloud computing technologies. There are many challenges in the design, implementation, and deployment of cloud computing, such as automated service provisioning, service monitoring and management, resource elasticity and interference/isolation between users, cloud programming models, economic models, charging and accounting, and service creation using virtual appliances. We believe that cloud computing will benefit from close interaction between researchers and industry practitioners, so that the research can inform current deployments and deployment challenges can inform new research. In support of this, HotCloud will provide a forum for both academics and practitioners to share their experience, leverage each other's perspectives, and identify new/emerging "hot" trends in this important area. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: * Platform as a service * Software as a service * Infrastructure as a service * Elasticity and availability in a cloud * Multi-tenancy * Storage cloud * Charging models and economics * Power-efficient ("green") computing for clouds * Monitoring, troubleshooting, and failure recovery * Cloud management and configuration * Programming models * Virtual appliance management and composition * Security and privacy in clouds * New applications for clouds * Mobile clouds * Cloud usage scenarios Submissions are due March 7, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. EST. For more details on the submission process, please see the complete Call for Papers at http://www.usenix.org/hotcloud11/cfpa We look forward to receiving your submissions! Message-ID: Hi everyone, We're just about a week and a half from the February 17th BayLISA general meeting, featuring a presentation on BIND 10 by a developer from ISC, the Internet Systems Consortium. On the schedule for March 17th is an alternative networking presentation featuring some technically inclined folks from Arista Networks and Force 10 Networks. Hope you can make to one or both of these sessions. RSVP and/or see more details as they become available, at the BayLISA Meetup site: http://www.meetup.com/BayLISA/ I'm trying to gauge interest in another short-topics session, tentatively set for June. A bunch of 10 minute presentations and one or two 20-30 minute presentations would make a very dense and satisfying evening. We probably won't do the forced ignite-style presentation, but keeping the presentations concise and on-track would be helpful to all involved. If you'd be interested in presenting, or have a suggestion for a presenter/topic, feel free to contact me directly or post on the list. But beyond that, what would you like to hear about? Who would you like to see? What are you seeing on the Internet that you want a more personal introduction to? What have you discovered at work that you'd like to share? (That latter bit is why I organized the alternative networking session. I might not have learned about some of this stuff but for sales reps moving around the industry.) And even further beyond that... what more do you want/need from BayLISA as an organization, if anything? Are you just in it for the presentations and free sodas? Is there something you'd really like to see from the organization, either as a general benefit or a specific membership perk? What would convince you to become a full member, or to renew your current membership when it expires? Looking forward to hearing from a lot of you.
