Why do this, especially if they are not bonded?

Mine don't.  :)  Our STK L700 with FC/LTO2 is just dandy and not 
overloaded at all!  Then again, we are back to the system being 8CPU 
with 8G RAM and multiple gigE nonrouted networks.
