Auto parts stores that sell batteries (autozone, pep boys, etc.) have 
battery disposal pickup runs that they contract out.  As such, they 
typically don't care if you just drop them off there.

If you want to be friendly about it, check with a clerk.  If you want to 
be less-than-friendly, just drop it off at the side entrance and drive 
away.  :-)
