I know this is very short notice, but at least three oakland perl mongers have said they'll attend... There will be a mini-sig-beer-east-bay event tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 7:30 pm at Jupiter (corner of Shattuck and Allston) in Berkeley. For anyone who doesn't know me, I'll be wearing a navy blue t-shirt with horizontal white pin stripes, so that you can identify the mini-sig-beer-east-bay folks. (I have long (tied back) dirty blond hair and a starter beard[1].) Also, FYI, Jupiter has two floors and an extensive outside courtyard area. We'll be there somewhere... This mini-sig-beer event grew out of a thread on the oakland perl users group mailing list.[2] David [1] Recently I shaved my beard of several years and immediately said "This sucks!!" so I'm growing it back. Myself and my colleague Aaron Krekelberg were asked to present at a Bay lisa meeting a while back on our work with Kazaa P2P security. We enjoyed the experience and thank you for your invitation. Interest in this story continues to persist, and I have recently been contacted by a member of Forbes magazine about an article on Kazaa. The author indicated that she is looking for "war stories from the trenches" about protecting corporate networks from Kazaa and other p2p apps, as well as issues around possible leaks of information through these networks. I am hoping (perhaps in vain) that I can get her to write a good article on how configuration, user error and usability problems are as much a part of security as buffer overflows. Since you guys are in the trenches everyday and voiced a lot of concern about the same issues during our talks, I thought that you guys might be able to help. If you know anyone who is interested, please send me their email address so that I can forward it to the author. BOFH's can bring out their holiday spirit, but we want real events please. New Members Are Always Welcome . . . . . . . . . . . . I'm advised that following the membership form submission on the website really does offer paypal payment near the end if you like; if you don't like, just bring your checkbook along to the meeting to finish the process. Corporations can be members at either of two levels, we have discounts for students, and membership in BayLISA, besides being a cool way to make sure we get fun speakers for the main part of the year, is a nice thing to note on your resume'. This is an especially good month to invite someone who may not be sure if they'd fit in to come on by and enjoy meeting with us as individuals. Our meetings are free and open to the public. I was asked, so I mention - yes, outside food and drink are fine. We're planning on bringing a snack spread and sodas as usual. Please try to be neat. Thanks in advance. A bunch of us like to go out afterwards for some sort of dinner, drinks and more conversation at one of the local latenight restaurants. -* Heather Stern * Arch (secretary) BayLISA Board * http://www.baylisa.org/ *- From alfw at slac.stanford.edu Fri Dec 20 08:55:20 2002 From: alfw at slac.stanford.edu (Alf Wachsmann) Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 08:55:20 -0800 (PST) Subject: BayLISA tomorrow, Dec 19, 7:30 pm Message-ID: Heather Stern wrote on Wed, 18 Dec 2002: > Short But Cool . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . > * Using PXE for workstation autoinstalls of Linux - Jim Dennis The PXE-Kickstart HowTo I talked about yesterday is available under http://www.slac.stanford.edu/~alfw/PXE-Kickstart/ -- Alf. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Alf Wachsmann | e-mail: alfw at slac.stanford.edu SLAC Computing Service | Phone: +1-650-926-4802 2575 Sand Hill Road, M/S 97 | FAX: +1-650-926-3329 Menlo Park, CA 94025, USA | Office: Bldg. 50/323 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.slac.stanford.edu/~alfw (PGP) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From bill at wards.net Fri Dec 20 15:16:23 2002 From: bill at wards.net (William R Ward) Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 15:16:23 -0800 Subject: My reaction to last night's meeting Message-ID: <15875.42183.32244.491865@komodo.home.wards.net> I liked the new building. And I think the "short but cool" format was a great idea. I hope we do that more often. Perhaps one or two "short but cool" talks could be given as "opening acts" to the main speaker? One nice thing about having several talks on different subjects is that you're less likely to drive away people who are not interested in the guest speaker's subject matter. Given the fact that it's the holiday season and a new location, we had a surprisingly good turnout. Some minor suggestions for improvement, both food-related: 1. Put the snacks in a place that's accessible without disturbing the main stage, so people can discreetly get a bite during a talk. 2. Have the restaurant picked out in advance. Personally I would like to stay with Frankie Johnnie & Luigi Too, but then I live in Mountain View so I'm biased. :-) But really, it's no farther from Apple than it was from the old location. Perhaps the restaurant could be different from one month to the next, rotating among various local venues, as long as it's decided on in advance. --Bill. -- William R Ward bill at wards.net http://www.wards.net/~bill/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Consistency is not really a human trait. --Maude (from the film "Harold & Maude") From aub at coldstone.com Fri Dec 20 22:42:20 2002 From: aub at coldstone.com (Alberto Begliomini) Date: Fri, 20 Dec 2002 22:42:20 -0800 Subject: My reaction to last night's meeting References: <15875.42183.32244.491865@komodo.home.wards.net> Message-ID: <3E040D4C.60809@coldstone.com> Bill, We thought about "attaching" a short-but-cool or two to the main talk in the past. We will re-address the issue at our next board meeting, and try to determine again how feasible that is. I am completely in agreement that the table for the food should be in the back, as it has always been. We got caught off guard last night, being the first time at the new location. In fact the table belonged to Jim Dennis and not our host. Many thanks to Jim for bringing a table with him!!! We will be talking to Apple shortly about having a couple of tables in back and few other things. Stay tuned! As far as the restaurant, we are looking at alternatives that can accommodate everyone's needs. There are very few restaurants that are open late, so the choice is limited. I like the idea of rotating venue, so at least we can make happy (or inconvenience, depending upon how you want to look at it) at few people every time. Again, discussion material for our next board meeting. Thanks for your feedback! Alberto Begliomini BayLISA President William R Ward wrote: > I liked the new building. Another resource for FreeBSD PXE-booting is Doug Ambrisko; his Web stuff tends to be anchored at http://www.ambrisko.com/doug. He doesn't seem to have any obviously PXE-related stuff posted there, but he (independently of Alfred's work) set up a PXE-based mechanism (that we both subsequently hacked a bit) to be able to roll out cloned workstations to developers (when he & I were both at Whistle [RIP]). I may have some notes somewhere; still recovering (as in, email backlog, among other things) from the local power outage yesterday. (I'd have called it merely an "interruption," but it lasted longer than the main UPS, which lasted an hour. :-{) Cheers, david (links to my resume at http://www.catwhisker.org/~david) -- David H.
